More than Acceptance and Affirmation: Clinical and Medical Interventions for Transgender Clients with Eating Disorders

Course Description:

This presentation will discuss medical and therapeutic implications when working with transgender clients who struggle with eating disorders. An overview of proper language and an exploration of possible gender biases will be conducted. Clinicians will learn how to diagnose for gender dysphoria and how to delineate if a client’s gender identity influences their eating disorder. Clinicians will then learn the possible medical interventions for transitioning and how they may impact eating disorder treatment.

Learning Objectives

  1. Attendees will understand the best practices when working with transgender clients after reviewing proper language, exploration of their own gender bias, and mental health issues related to transgender clients.
  2. Attendees will understand the implications for clinicians when working with transgender clients who struggle with eating disorders and how to best navigate the relationship between the eating disorder and the transgender identity.
  3. Attendees will understand the medical implications when working with transgender clients who struggle with eating disorders who have also undergone medical transitioning.

Margherita Mascolo, MD, CEDS

As Chief Medical Director at Alsana, Margherita Mascolo, leads the medical component of Alsana’s Adaptive Care Model. After completing her undergraduate work at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, Margherita earned her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Her residency was completed in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado in Denver. Margherita is board certified in Internal Medicine, has published multiple peer reviewed articles on the medical complications of eating disorders, travels nationally and internationally to speak on these complications, and has earned her certified eating disorder specialist certification.
